Gynecomastia or ‘Man Boobs’ as it is commonly referred to is an excess of fat and glandular tissue that accummulates in the male breasts causing many men much frustration and embarrassment. If you belong to this group, this simple surgical procedure may be your solution.
At your consultation with the surgeon, you will be evaluated as to whether the procedure is suitable for you. There are several factors such as your medical history and current health status that are very important. While discussing your issues, it’s important that you have realistic expectations of what a gynecomastia is and what it can do. The consultation with the surgeon will enable you to come to an informed decision.
Man-Boobs or (MOOBS) is an accumulation of excess fat and possibly glandular tissue in the male breast. Most men don’t realize that breast fat and glandular tissue is also normally present in a male. These tissues can grow or become excessive during puberty or as a result of hormone changes in adulthood. The breast tissue that develops during puberty will normally resolve itself over time as the male body grows and develops. If there are hormonal or other issues involved, it’s best to first consult with your home doctor before undergoing any type of surgical treatment.
Unfortunately, persistent man-boobs are a source of frustration and embarrassment that can lead to the loss of self-confidence for a man.
The good news is, the problem can be treated quite simply and effectively. For excess fatty tissue, a simple liposuction to breast area can solve the issue. If breast glands are also present, a small incision under the breast or around the areola area is made to remove this tissue separately. Which method is used is based upon your physical examination and discussion with your surgeon.
A gynecomastia surgery can be performed with either a local injection anesthesia (in which you will be awake during the entire time), or it can be done with a full general anesthesia (in which you are sleeping for the entire duration of the surgery). You can choose which option you prefer with your doctor at the consultation. With local anesthesia, there may be minimal discomfort, but besides the initial needle injections, there is no pain. The doctor will give you painkillers after the surgery to ease any discomfort for the first few days.
This really depends on your job. With office work, you can return to your normal routines after a week’s rest. If your job involves heavier physical activity, it’s best to give yourself a few week’s rest post-treatment. With regards to exercise, the same general principle applies. Light walking activities are ok after a week or so. Heavier lifting activities should be avoided for several weeks. More information about returning to everyday normal activity will be discussed at your final checkup appointment.
Having a gynecomastia surgery in no way affects your sexual ability or desires. Each patient is different with regards to when they feel ready to return to sexual relations after surgery.
Since a gynecomastia surgery is not related to your sexual organs in any way, it will not influence your sexual stamina. The amount of energy you have is related, however, to having had surgery in general. It’s best to give yourself adequate amounts of time after the treatment to recover and regain your normal energy levels. With regards to losing nipple sensitivity, there may be a loss of sensation temporarily due to the cutting of skin nerves in the breast. All sensitivity in the nipple area will return after a few short months of recovery.
Tanning is not generally recommended following surgery as the sunlight can influence the results of the final scar healing. It’s recommended that you avoid outdoor tanning and indoor salons for a minimum of 3 weeks of post-treatment.
Since there is always a risk of developing an infection in a fresh wound – which can affect how the final scars look and heal -, it’s best to avoid ‘dirty’pools, saunas, jacuzzis and even the ocean or lakes for at least 4 weeks post-treatment.
Bruising after a Man Boob or MOOB surgery is minimal and present in the areas mostly where the incision have been made. For a few weeks after the treatment, this may be visible, but will completely disappear shortly thereafter. The extent of scarring and bruising is dependent on the type of procedure that is performed. This will all be discussed at the consultation. Most scars will totally disappear and become invisible after a few month’s time.
As like many other plastic surgeries, your chest may be a bit swollen immediately following the surgery. You will also need to wear a breast compression garment for a few weeks. The garment helps to keep the chest flat and swelling down. Once the garment comes off, your results will be immediately noticeable and you will experience a normal chest contour once again.
As with any type of surgery, there will be bruising and swelling immediately post-op. The incision areas and stitches are visible and there may be a little body fluid leakage for a few days. This will not be noticeable as you will wear dressings and a compression garment for a few weeks. Once the stitches are removed and the garment comes off, your chest will quickly settle into its final position with a natural shape and contour.
Good, long-lasting results from any type of surgery a very much a matter of the individual patient’s own body. Everyone is different and results will vary. With proper diet, good health, avoidance of strong medications or recreational drugs, steroids, and sudden changes in body weight, the results of gynecomastia surgery should last for many years.
