At your consultation with the surgeon, you will be evaluated as to whether the procedure is suitable for you. There are several factors such as your medical history and current health status that are very important. While discussing your issues, it’s important that you have realistic expectations of what an upper eyelid blepharoplasty is and what it can do. The consultation with the surgeon will enable you to come to an informed decision.
An upper blepharoplasty or eyelid lift is one of the most commonly performed plastic surgeries, and because our eyes are involved, is part of what we would call ‘global facial rejuvenation’ treatment. Independent of our age, the upper eyelids can frequently become heavy feeling, puffy or saggy making us look and feel tired, sad and older. The goal of an upper blepharoplasty surgery is to remove the excess amounts of skin, fat and sometimes muscle tissue that is weighing down on the drooping upper eyelids.
The incision for an upper blepharoplasty is concealed with the natural upper eyelid crease. This is where the excess skin, fat and possibly muscle will be removed. Once removed, the upper and lower edges of the skin are sutured together creating a very thin, fine scar line that heals exactly within this natural crease.
An upper eyelid blepharoplasty takes about 45-60 minutes to complete.
When done alone, an upper eyelid blepharoplasty is performed with just a local injection anesthetic which means you will be awake for the duration of the procedure.
Although the risk of complication developing as a result of an upper eyelid blepharoplasty is small, all surgery comes with risk. Complications can include: bleeding, infection, asymmetry, wound separation, visible scar line, excess or insufficient skin, muscle or fat removal. You will be advised at the consultation as to how best manage a complication if it develops.
Following surgery, your eyes will be taped and sutured for a week (5-7 days). There will be redness, swelling and bruising that will be at it worst at around day 2-3. During this time it’s recommended that heavy reading, computer work and bending over is avoided. Beyond this, there are no other restrictions and you are able to move about the day with light activities. A good pair of sunglasses is recommended to protect your eyes outdoors from dust and other small particles. You should not rub, wash or scratch your eyes and avoid using contact lenses until the stitches are out. After the stitches are removed, you can return to most of your daily routine and work. Bruising should completely disappear within 2 weeks of the surgery.
Some surgeons will removed stitches in 5 days, some in 7 days following the procedure. Assuming your stay in Budapest is for minimum 1 week, all the stitches should be removed before home departure.
The recommended stay time in Budapest for an upper eyelid blepharoplasty is 7 days or 1 week.
No, under normal circumstances, once you have had the stitches removed, there is no further need for any follow up care or treatment when you return home. This will be discussed at the consultation.
As a general rule, you will be able to see much of the result immediately or within a few days of the surgery. Over the course of the following 4-6 weeks, about 70% of the healing will have taken place. The final scar healing will gradually fade and become invisible over a few month’s time.
No, if there no issues or further questions regarding the surgery, the treatment will be considered completed. There is no need to return to Budapest.
An upper eyelid blepharoplasty can be performed either alone or together with other procedures as part of a more extensive global facial rejuvenation program. For example, an upper eyelid blepharoplasty is frequently combined with a lower eyelid blepharoplasty to rejuvenate the entire eyes and make you look younger. Other procedures that can be combined with an upper eyelid blepharoplasty include a facelift, brow lift, forehead lift, laser skin rejuvenation treatment, and botox and filler treatment.
